The problem with walking through a virtual reality world is that you're subject to the physical world's spatial limitations. That's why the Enterprise's holodeck always gave me headaches. But I get it now: they had a CyberWalk.

CyberWalk is an omni-directional platform; essentially, a giant treadmill that adjusts its speed and direction to allow for unlimited exploration of a virtual space. It's the love child of a consortium of German, Italian, and Swiss labs that's able to detect when and how quickly a user is changing direction:

By precisely monitoring the position of the user on the platform using a Vicon motion-capture system, the controller computes estimates for the two variables and tries to adjust the speeds of the linear belts to keep the user close to the center — all without abrupt accelerations.

The video demo makes it clear that we're still in the elementary stages, but trust me: we'll be matching wits with Moriarty before you know it.

A questão é inevitável: será o Ubuntu 10.04, o sistema operativo perfeito para um utilizador tradicional?

O lançamento do Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 sempre esteve rodeado de uma certa ansiedade. Não é comum tal facto por parte de uma distribuição Linux, mas o Ubuntu tem conseguido conquistar cada vez mais utilizadores para o mundo OpenSource.

Em traços gerais o que esperar deste novo Ubuntu 10.04?

Num artigo publicado recentemente (ver aqui), já foi levantado um pouco o véu a esta questão). O Ubuntu, na minha opinião, tem conseguido cada vez mais adeptos uma vez que também se tem tornado um sistema operativo cada vez mais simples de usar. E isso, é certamente uma característica que todos os utilizadores apreciam.

Por outro lado, a aposta ao acesso facilitado às redes sociais, ao twitter, à cloud, MSN, ICQ, gTalk, a integração com outros sistemas, a disponibilização de ferramentas gratuitas são trunfos que têm diferenciado o Ubuntu de outras distribuições e até mesmo de outros sistemas operativos.

O visual também mudou, graças aos novos temas Radiance e Ambiance que agora dão “cara” a este grande sistemas operativo.

Quanto ao software, mais de 30 mil programas totalmente gratuitos e simples de obter (one click).

The dangerous ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano brought European air traffic to a halt. For a while, the skies over the north of Europe were almost empty of airplanes. Then, the ash went away and the beautiful mayhem resumed.

The Video is a visualisation of the northern European airspace returning to use after being closed. Due to varying ash density across Europe, the first flights can be seen in some areas on the 18th and by the 20th everywhere is open.

The flight data is courtesy of flightradar24.com and covers a large fraction of Europe. There are a few gaps (most noticeably France) and no coverage over the Atlantic, but the picture is still clear.
