As true admirer of everything that as to do with FREITAG, I was really excited with the release of the new REFERENCE Bag Collection.

In the same place I heard about it (swissmiss), I saw their mini lecture series, curated by swissmiss her self, the FREITAG am Donnerstag (Friday on Thursday), to celebrate their new REFERENCE Collection.

Now that video is the new black, i´ve chosen to share this great documentary. A Short Story by Relentless Energy that challenges recognised core sports and music filmmakers around the world to explore, reveal and define 'No Half Measures' through the medium of film.

The first Short Stories film, by renowned photographer and bodyboarder Mickey Smith, explores his world as a true waterman - both as an athlete and artist, and is called The Dark Side of The Lens. Hope you enjoy. I did.

Recently we had the pleasure to develop a campaign for Movicel with the presence of Jean Jacques, former star player of Angola basketball team and of SL Benfica (Portugal).

It's a wish of support, hope, success, trust, given by Movicel to Angola national basketball team as its official sponsor.

"Vamos dar que falar", closely "We will be heard", was the concept and claim given to the campaign. One can see here the spot and some images. You could also cheer for Angola during the World Basketball Championship which is taking place in Turkey, from August 28th to September 12.

Is design passional or rational? A tasty conversation with Mário Mandacarú, Alexandre Duarte and Alexandra Sampaio Pássaro.

Wednesday, September the 8th at 18.00 PM sharp at NAD Design Café.

Late admissions will not go through the revolving door. Mobile phones must be switched off during the entire session. Blackberries will be thrown out of the window. Eating is not permitted. Talking is obliged. Popcorns are not included and we did not invite any star to distract you.

A gift bag was supposed to be included but the funds never reached our bank account. We offer a pin, though. A really nice one. You can sell it on EBAY afterwards.

Old Coke-Cola

Design is History (www.designishistory.com) it's a site developed and updated by designer Dominic Flask where you can find really good content about the history of design from the early ways of comunication, thru Early Typographers, Peter Behrens, De Stijl, Herbert Bayer, Swiss Design, to Wolff Olins, Sagmeister and Debbie Millman.

"As a designer it is important to understand where design came from, how it developed, and who shaped its evolution. The more exposure you have to past, current and future design trends, styles and designers, the larger your problem-solving toolkit. The larger your toolkit, the more effective of a designer you can be."

from www.designishistory.com

Thanks so much for the awesome post! Glad you liked the site.

Inspirational video about Pascal Campion of Scketch of The Day.

In this video he talks about his work, what inspires him and the importance of the message in his work "story telling is absolutely everything" the way the artwork makes the viewer feel something.

And the most important thought Create/Make. A good Idea is just a good idea when it's actually made.

"The more you draw the better you're gonna get... you're not gonna go backwards.. you're not going to forget anything... you're just going to get better."

ele não é só um bom ilustrador como também sabe fazer uma boa pós ilustração. Nicynice

The apartment and private gallery, which apparently can be found somewhere in Greenwich Village, New York, was designed by UNstudio for some enviably wealthy fellow over the course of the last three years.

Its curving walls offer ample space for the owner's private art collection, and the space is lit by 18,000 diffused LEDs.

A mirage—you know, like an imagined oasis when you're crawling through a never-ending desert. Or like the phantasmal barge, wrought from 32 tons of welded wire mesh, that's floating in the lagoons of Venice right now.

That second mirage is actually Croatia's pavilion for the Venice Biennale, a contemporary art event that happens every odd year. It was designed by 14 leading Croatian architects, who formed 30 tons of wire into 40 sinuous layers to create a sort of architectural Fata Morgana.

When we think in architecture, we think in innovation, big construtions, transparency...we think in modernity. Most of the time we forget how everything started. The blog I want to show here is "an unexpected book from architecture that is forgotten and abandoned".

Cubes crawl through a warehouse, spraying graffiti on the walls. Colored threads shoot out from every direction, webbing a vacant room. That's just the start of the abstract, beautiful stop-motion True Colors. And not a single digital effect was used.

Instead, Quintessenz Creation strung together 5,000 pictures—15 pictures per second—to make this short that is as labor intensive as it is stunning.

This is doubtless the most productivity ever shown by a group of students standing within 5m of a beer carton.

BOXEL was created by some University of Applied Sciences students in Detmold over one week, tasked with the challenge of creating a summer pavilion in 1:1 scale. Apparently, the beer boxes are not merely stocked on top of one another, but "freely organized," with slats, screws and bracings holding it all together. This means they weren't just drunkenly piling boxes on top of each other, then.

According to the architects, the "Batumi Aquarium is inspired by the characteristic pebbles of the Batumi beach-–the residue of dynamic seas continually shaping the shorefront throughout millennia." Each of the stones forming the building will hold a unique marine biotype.

One will hold fauna and flora from the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, the other from the Indian Ocean, and the third one from the Black and Red Seas. The fourth stone will hold an interactive exhibition.

It will be located on the seashore of Batumi, the main port of the Republic of Georgia, on the Black Sea coast.

This flickery 57-meter-long cube is the TED, The Interlaced Building, a new building being constructed in Taiwan. Apart from its beautiful—albeit sightly dizzying—looks, the feature that stands out is its giant spiraling stairs, which end in an amphitheaterish open rooftop.

Observation Tower, over the Mur River (between Austria and Slovenia)

This observation tower by Munich office terrain:loenhart&mayr rises over the river Mur at the Austrian border with Slovenia. The aluminium-clad structure staircase curls back on itself at the top, forming a double spiral so that visitors on the way up pass those on the way down.

The Aquatic Centre located in Beijing, China, has been designed by the PTW + CCDI + Arup group, and the construction finished in 2008. Now, the structure appears with another aim and look. In addition to being the aquatic venue for the Olympics it was provided public, multi function leisure and fitness facilities before and after the Games.

The concept combines the symbolism of the square in Chinese culture and the design uses state of the art technology and materials to create a building that is visually striking, energy efficient and ecologically friendly.

On Sunday 8th August – the two year anniversary of the start of the Beijing Olympics – the Water Cube was reopened to the public as Asia’s largest indoor water park.

“The Water Cube is a dynamic space. The brief from the client was simply to develop a world class concept, in keeping with the stature of the building and drawing from the ethereal quality of the interior environment. Every detail has been considered, from theatrical lighting and glass mosaic tiles to custom props and some ‘first-ever’ attractions.” Sian Disson

These stunning macro shots of eyes by Suren Manvelyan show detail that I didn't even know existed. We've got some pretty complex machinery onboard, don't we?

To this we can call a MACRO. Incredible detail.

Andy Spain is an architectural photographer based in London. For the last few years he has been working on a series of images called ecocities.

Spain's Ecocities series of images include either stock photos of London landmarks, or shots he's taken himself, but all have been adapted somehow to give a view of an ideal world's London. A city where blimps hover by the Tower Bridge and the Battersea Power Station has a wind turbine on each chimney.

Who doesn´t know Marion Bataille!? She is a graphic artist and illustrator who also works in all the best French Publishers. You may know her first book to be published in UK ABC3D.

Marion Bataille is coming out with a new pop-up book! "10" it should be available soon in France. Can’t wait! // isbn: 978 226 208 729

It is a great demonstration of criativity. Particulary I appreciate the part of the letter V and de "double v" showed in the mirror. I think it's brilliant.

HOK, along with Beck Group, has designed a new museum to house the works of Salvador Dalí in St. Petersburg, Florida. The architecture, greatly inspired by the great surrealist, “combines elements of the classical and the fantastical,” according to the director of the museum. The design speaks to the essence of Dalí while incorporating functional elements to combat Florida’s tough weather.

More images and more about the museum here.

One image is worth a thousand words", it is regularly said. Still, these images are far from being capable to reveal all the emotions one has when we are inside these two places: Vitra House, in Weil am Rhein (Germany), and Rolex Learning Center, in Lausanne (Switzerland).

Architecture is much more than matter, form or function; good architecture is more of what provokes in us, what causes emotion and what makes us to wish and desire more quality of life. Experiencing the architecture of these places, changes us.

I have enjoyed in particular the Rolex Learning Center, for its youth, irreverence, comfort, functionality, challenge, dynamic, light and for being politically incorrect.

On Thursday (29th July), at 7 pm, Nad/ Design Cafe will receive a wine tasting of traditional Alentejo wines organized by the Herdade do Monte dos Seis Reis, located in Estremoz.

The vineyard with eight years old has an area of 50 hectares and is integrated on the Route of the Alentejo Wines. The actual cellar has a capacity to produce 700 thousand bottles.

The brand, Monte Seis Reis - Six Kings Hill -, was created after a research into the history of Estremoz - a town that over the centuries had very close ties to six monarchs. The charter was given to Estremoz in 1258 by Afonso III and it was renewed in 1512 by King Manuel I.
King Dinis, Queen Elisabeth of Aragon e King Peter I also lived in Estremoz, and these last two died here.

The wines to be tasted are a fine selection of red, white and rose wines. The main grapes are Aragonês, Trincadeira Preta, Castelão Francês, Tinta Caiada, Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvigon and Alicante Bouschet.

An excellent time on the end of the day at NAD/ Design Cafe to relax and taste the best Alentejo has to give - its ripe fruited and full-bodied wines.

This video, suggested by Nuno Veiga, is an amazing motion work, not only because of the way the managed to create all the ideas for all the 35 movies, but also because of the great, but simple, graphic/motion design.

While I was "walking" around on my daily reference blogs I found this project, via { designvagabond }, and I just wonder how nice this would be at my backyard.

Each time I remember flying over The Governors Island I remember what a special place it is, so close do Manhattan, and so different. And thinking about this project, a sustainable design of Ann Ha and Behrang Behin, I remember also the 99% Conference in April, where the plans for the island were presented.

What a great way of using this fabulous place.

I can listen to Dieter Rams talking about anything for hours. However, from this new and fascinating seven minute video, I would like to focus on the quote above. Watch it in context, and enjoy:

I'd like also to add another quote from this video: Not outstanding design. Better design.

It's always great to ear people that look for the real meaning of design. Dieter is absolutely fantastic. What he did in his career will be respected forever.

an unscientific point of view on the beginning and evolution of life ... and how it could probably end.
A very creative use of the city to exhibit art and criticism.
